Welsh Highland Garratts on the Ffestiniog Railway

South African NGG16 Garratts on the Ffestiniog

Two class NGG16 Beyer-Garratts (138 and 143) were overhauled on the Alfred County Railway and shipped to Wales.  Further work was required to make them fit for service on the Welsh Highland, but by May 1997 no 138 was in working order and paraded before the public during the 1997 Ffestiniog Gala at Glanypwll, running on the Dinas branch.  The pair had been joined by No 140 from the same batch which is yet to be returned to service, while no 143 (the last built Beyer-Garrett) was still undergoing overhaul, one of it's power units being seen at Boston Lodge.
