I saw the train off from Minffordd, but had to walk about 300 yards to the car, so did not expect to see it again until nearer Tan-y-Bwlch. Driving up through Penrhyn I saw people walking away from the crossing which I assumed meant that the train had already passed through. However I decided to go and check with the crossing keeper, who told me he was still waiting for the Simplex. Eventually, 12 minutes after leaving Minffordd, Little Wonder's bell was heard and the Simplex crossed the road. The reason for the slow journey was that the Simplex had been turned and the crew were concerned that the same accident that had happended at Harbour on Saturday might occur as they ran through Penrhyn station.
The slow pace gave me hope that I could beat the train to Three Gates Crossing in the woods below Tan-y-bwlch, and after a brisk walk through the woods from the car park near Tan-y-Bwlch station I arrived well ahead of the Simplex, which came into view 27 minutes after passing Penrhyn. I think Dave High was a little embarassed at being beaten there, but he might now be amused to hear I ended up doing a fair bit of damage to my running gear on the way, meaning that I could hardly manage to lift one leg over the stile at Three Gates (and on the Monday was partly to blame for arriving at the Talyllyn's Cynfal Halt on my backside!). What might have been taken for a grin in the direction of the crew was most certainly a grimace!
