Hunslet Hundred Gala, May 1993
My narrow-gauge education was mainly spent at Tywyn, with occasional forays up the coast to see the other line. After being intoduced to the line in the 1960s, when Tanybwlch was still a quiet grassy oasis, later visits saddened me and I paid little attention to the goings on at Porthmadog, my interest in the heritage of the line seemed at odds with the push to Blaenau and appeared not to be shared by those on the FR. As a result, visits to North Wales were less frequent than they might otherwise be, but it appears that enough people were of the same opinion as myself during these years...
A summer holiday looked unlikely in 1993, but rumours of a gala at Porthmadog to mark the centenary of 'Linda' & 'Blanche' offered an alternative, a weekend in North Wales. What a surprise on arrival at Harbour station on Saturday afternoon, two traditional outline double Fairlies (one of which I hadn't even known existed), a long lost England engine risen like a phoenix and a fascinating collection of visiting locomotives, including the oft-forgotten elder brother of the two stars of the show.
